How are children selected for Reading Recovery?Students are selected for the intervention based on their scores on the six tasks of An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement (Dr. Marie M. Clay). These six tasks are: continuous reading of text, letter identification, reading a sight word list, writing vocabulary, hearing and recording sounds in words (phonemic awareness) and concepts about print. Only students with the lowest comparative literacy scores are selected for the intervention
Descubriendo la LecturaDescubriendo la Lectura is the Spanish reconstruction of Reading Recovery to assist first-time first graders who are struggling to learn to read and write in Spanish. The selection of Descubriendo la Lectura students is based on the use of the Instrumento de observacion de los logros de la lecto-escritura inicial (Dr. Kathy Escamilla, et. al.).

Who teaches Reading Recovery?Reading Recovery and Descubriendo la Lectura teachers are highly trained specialists who design individual lessons for four to six children every day. Reading Recovery teachers provide each of these children with one-on-one 30 minute teaching sessions. The daily individualized lessons are tailored to each child’s unique profile of understandings and confusions about literacy and serve as an efficient way to assist the student in catching up to the average of his or her class. As soon as this acceleration and independence is achieved, the student’s Reading Recovery services are discontinued, and another struggling student takes his or her place. Reading Recovery teachers work with four children daily. These teachers have at least one other role on their campus such as classroom teacher or small group intervention teacher.
